Silicosis is an occupational lung disease caused by breathing in silica dust. Over time this disease can destroy a person's breathing capacity and cause death. In the USA, it is estimated that more than one million workers are occupationally exposed to free crystalline silica dusts, and approximately 59,000 will eventually develop silicosis. It is reported that each year in the USA about 300 people die from silicosis.

The Silicosis Lawyers’ Network was created to help victims of silicosis find experienced legal help. Are you at risk for silicosis?

Silicosis is one of the worlds' oldest occupational diseases. It is an incurable lung disease caused by inhalation of dust containing free crystalline silica. It is irreversible and frightening because it continues to progress even when exposure stops. Silica, the most common element found in the earth’s crust, is a major component of beach sand and granite.

Silica dust is released during operations in which rocks, sand, concrete and some ores are crushed or broken. Silica exposure most often occurs in people who work in construction, mining, sandblasting, stonecutting, abrasives manufacturing, and in people who work with glass, pottery, and on railroads.

Raising Awareness
There is widespread lack of awareness of silicosis and its magnitude as well as lack of knowledge of available solutions. Here are some other concerns about the disease:

Under-diagnosis and under-reporting are common

The lack of primary preventive measures, such as control of dust generation and respiratory protection

Shortcomings in legislation and labor inspection for enforcement

More resources are allocated to dealing with the consequences of harmful occupational exposure rather than to its prevention.
